17: Meet Katie: An amazing (progressive) Pub Landlady, who nurses on the side

Updated: Oct 15

The Bertie was my 'local' for many years; and me, my ex-husband and our kids went there quite a bit. It was our village pub and very much the hub/core of (our old) village life.

And Katie is the mastermind behind it. And I say mastermind, because it really has been a labour of love and ongoing 'project'...

Purchased by the village farmers (Katie and James Genever), 7ish years ago, it has been completely transformed from a tired, old, profitless pub, into a full destination stop/pub for miles around. It's always busy and it's always moving forward. Be that with it's menu, it's entertaining (bands, quiz nights, themes nights), or simply with it's decor, which regularly gets tweaks and additions. It's a progressive establishment, run by a big-hearted progressive family.

I admired Katie from the get-go, and my 'ex' and I attended many a funny new year's eve bash at their house - fun is 100% at the core of the 'Genever' brand. As is hard work, community and quite simply, care. Care for others, care the for the village, the land, the community. They are people that really care beyond themselves and as such they're a huge inspiration to me, and to many others.

I'm so chuffed that Katie said yes to coming on TWW.

Katie's social handles are: @katiegenever and @bertie_arms

Enjoy.

PS. The background noise you can hear is the pub on a weekday lunch shift. Which I happen to love and think is perfectly fitting for the chat. However, if it annoys you, apologies, but please don't give up on it; Katie has a great story to tell, so bear with it.
