For anyone interested, I combined my pod with Helen, down in Surrey, with an overnight with one of my bestest friends in the world, so all-in-all this was a fab 24-36 hours for me. Made even better by what a joy Helen was to chat to.
We sat and chatted in Helen's near empty gallery space (hence the echo), because she is mid-move to a new space... Which we touch on in the chat, but which Helen didn't want to go into lots of detail on, because of legal contracts and the like.
Even so, a very exciting time for her, and a testament to her work ethic and bravery with this venture. Because even though she did an Art History degree when she was younger, it wasn't what she went on to pursue as a career. Why? Lots of reasons, but the main one being that she simply didn't think she could, either due to societal perceptions, and/or financial restrictions... It wasn't a job she thought someone like her could do back then.
But now that she's in her 40s and has bossed a successful marketing career for nearly 20-years, it's a different ball-game. That youthful fear has been replaced by an innate belief in her own ability; meaning a few years ago, she bit the bullet and set-up her own Art Consultancy (online). Which was shortly followed with her first gallery space (which she's now moving out on and from), and from here, it's just an onwards and upwards trajectory.
Helen's goal and her plan is simple: To make art accessible to all, not just the elite. Everyone and anyone that would love to find affordable (to them), meaningful pieces to hang and have at their homes or places of work. 'The Art Buyer's' ethos is about helping anyone find and buy artwork - and to help more artists sell artwork, irrelevant of their background.
Which she is doing brilliantly, and she's going from strength to strength with it.
Enjoy.
