Welcome to our first ever 'Break Room' chat!
Break Room is one of many (MANY) ideas I've got for TWW, so I decided to just bite the bullet and give this one a go... And I forced one of my absolute besties, Jo, to do it with me ('cos she'd never say no to me).
There was no plan... and I'll be honest and say that is quite apparent. It's mostly just me having a rant (and Jo trying to reign me in) based on private chats Jo and I have been having for a couple of weeks, after something with her own working situation really knocked her (confidence) for six, and as a result, she was left feeling pretty lost about what her next career move should be.
In the chat we talk about feeling unsure about the role we now play in the working world - and indeed the corporate working world - given our age, and the career choices we have made; and predominantly the choice we made, with our spouses (albeit mine is an ex-spouse), to take career breaks to 'support the family' and support our spouses careers.
Given those choices, where does our experience now fit, in comparison to others that haven't taken breaks, or others that are younger (and potentially yet to take career breaks)?
And how do we get employers to notice us more and see the value we can still bring to the workplace?
There's lots to unpack with both of these questions, and in truth, Jo and I barely scratch the surface... However, it's a start and it's a topic I definitely want to keep talking about, one way or another.
So please give me some feedback, and some suggestions... How do we keep a dialogue like this going and what should that dialogue be?
Thanks everyone,
Chops x
